Compact Setup of a Tunable Heterodyne Spectrometer for Infrared Observations of Atmospheric Trace-Gases

چکیده
We report on the development and characterization of the new compact infrared heterodyne receiver, iChips (Infrared Compact Heterodyne Instrument for Planetary Science). It is specially designed for ground-based observations of the terrestrial atmosphere in the mid-infrared wavelength region. Mid-infrared room temperature quantum cascade lasers are implemented into a heterodyne system for the first time. Their tunability allows the instrument to operate in two different modes. The scanning mode covers a spectral range of few wavenumbers continuously with a resolution of approximately ν ∆ν ≥ 10. This mode allows the determination of the terrestrial atmospheric transmission. The staring mode, applied for observations of single molecular transition features, provides a spectral resolution of ν ∆ν ≥ 10 and a bandwidth of 1.4 GHz. To demonstrate the instrument’s capabilities, initial observations in both modes were performed by measuring the terrestrial transmittance at 7.8 μm (∼ 1,285 cm−1) and by probing terrestrial ozone features at 8.6 μm (∼ 1,160 cm−1), respectively. The receivers characteristics and performance are described.

Mobile laboratory with rapid response instruments for real-time measurements of urban and regional trace gas and particulate distributions and emission source characteristics.
Recent technological advances have allowed the development of robust, relatively compact, low power, rapid response (approximately 1 s) instruments with sufficient sensitivity and specificity to quantify many trace gases and aerosol particle components in the ambient atmosphere. Suites of such instruments can be deployed on mobile platforms to study atmospheric processes, map concentration dist...
متن کاملBroadly tunable mid-infrared noise-immune cavity-enhanced optical heterodyne molecular spectrometer.
The sensitive spectroscopic technique noise-immune cavity-enhanced optical heterodyne molecular spectroscopy (NICE-OHMS) has been successfully used in a variety of systems; however, no broadly tunable setup has been developed for the mid-infrared. To this end, we have integrated a difference frequency generation system into a NICE-OHMS setup. Initial optimization and characterization was comple...

WASP2 is a lag correlation spectrometer that is optimized for astronomical heterodyne observations of spectral lines from mid-infrared through centimeter wavelengths. Since the instrument is a wideband microwave spectrum analyzer, its basic technology is well suited to radio astronomy, atmospheric remote sensing, and any other application which requires observations of broad spectral lines. In ...
متن کاملCompact laser difference-frequency spectrometer for multicomponent trace gas detection
Design, performance characteristics, and application of a room temperature mid-infrared laser spectrometer are reported. This compact instrument is based on differencefrequency mixing of a widely tunable external-cavity diode laser and a diode-pumped monolithic Nd:YAG ring laser in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). The differencefrequency tuning range of 3.98 μm to 4.62 μm was sufficie...
متن کاملAtmospheric observations of multiple molecular species using ultra-high-resolution external cavity quantum cascade laser heterodyne radiometry.
We demonstrate a widely tunable laser heterodyne radiometer operating in the thermal IR during an atmospheric observation campaign in the solar occultation viewing mode. An external cavity quantum cascade laser tunable within a range of 1120 to 1238 cm(-1) is used as the local oscillator (LO) of the instrument. Ultra-high-resolution (60 MHz or 0.002 cm(-1) transmission spectroscopy of several a...
